Message from the Leadership Team

We hope that you had many joyful and carefree moments with your children so far this summer and that you have many to come in the remaining summer days. During these stressful times, living in the moment, when possible, is more important than ever for our individual and collective wellbeing. The joy is always found in the present, and it is a welcome break from preparing for an uncertain future.

With that hope expressed, we can feel change in the air.   As we think about starting the new school year, there is much to process and figure out.  How do we prepare ourselves and our children for the new reality?  How will we keep our children off the screens to the best degree possible? How will children manage in school when their natural way is to get close and they will need to remain masked and apart?  Will our houses ever be clean or tidy again? Togetherness is great but sure makes tiding up never-ending!

Not much is certain or clear as we begin but one thing is-- our purpose here in our Litchfield community includes helping each other, cultivating compassion, supporting each other and lifting each other up when we are down.  Because we live in a community filled with compassionate and caring souls, we can lean into hope and trust that we will get through what comes together.

Parenting is the best and hardest thing most of us will ever do.  Together we are stronger than when we are trying to stand alone.  This year, the goals of the 2020-2021 PTO are:

  • That everyone (parents, teachers, staff, administrators, children) in our community will feel that they are part of PTO and that all involved will feel a sense of ownership and belonging.
  • That we will create a culture built on a foundation of kindness, social justice and equality, inclusion and belonging.  Additionally, that we will incorporate and support growth mindset and mindfulness initiatives, which are important for the wellbeing of our children.  (We will align with social/emotional curriculum at our schools.)
  • That we will offer programs to support parents and provide helpful information.
  • That Membership Toolkit will have as close to 100% participation rate as possible.
  • That we will fundraise effectively, unobtrusively, and creatively.

With Appreciation,

The PTO 2019/2020 Leadership Team

Sarah Bolton, Debra Cahill, Brynn Campbell, Kallyn Gangell, Amy Laskowitz, Sanna Lillie, Lauren Malia Eterginio, Monica Harrison, Melissa Thurston,  Caroline Wilcox Ugurlu (Note:   “Sweet” Caroline is banned. There will be no touching hands, reaching out, touching me, touching you during Covid 19.)

Annual Fund Campaign

We will be starting our Annual Fund Campaign in August. We are hoping and suggesting that those that can, will donate $50 per student to help us fund programs and teacher grants for the 2020-2021 school year. Any amount is appreciated.  Please consider making a donation today.

PTO has always offered $100 grants to teachers as a token contribution to help offset what they all spend from their own pockets (last year we granted 22 requests).  We don’t know how we will fundraise this year so this request for donations carries a different weight than usual.  Your contribution will enable us to support our teachers and provide for the emerging needs of our children.

Amazon Smile

The Litchfield PTO participates in the Amazon Smile program.  Click the link and a percentage from eligible purchases will be donated to fund initiatives at our schools. This can add up because most all of us are shopping on Amazon these days!

Toots will be applause!  Visit the homepage to register. Please make video submissions of five minutes or less. The Leadership Team

We wanted to share why we joined PTO and what we find rewarding.  We hope that it motivates you to join us.

Caroline Wilcox Ugurlu going to do important business!
President - Caroline Wilcox Ugurlu

I love volunteering for the Litchfield PTO because I get to know people in a way I never would otherwise. I learn about what is important to them and discover their, often hidden, talents.  The Litchfield PTO, accomplishes a lot by supporting people in doing what they feel called to do for our community. It is so uplifting to know that people care so much.

Contributing to creating a culture of belonging for all is what is important to me. That is why the talent show makes me teary every year.  Kids bring it and are supported by the community!

Vice President - Sarah Bolton

As a parent and social worker, I have seen the undeniable benefits to children and adults of having strong connections to their community and am proud to be a part of a PTO that celebrates all of its community members and brings us together.  I love meeting people and hearing their stories and having FUN!  I also love talking to people, especially while eating cheese, such as in this photo ;)

Secretary - Monica Harrison

The PTO supports the entire school community (teachers, staff and students) which is directly connected to academic and social-emotional health for children. As a part of the PTO I’m investing in not only the success of my own child but the entire student body adding to my life goal to be a part of positive change.

Kallyn Gangell - Co-Treasurer

I enjoy being on the PTO, because it allows me to connect with the greater school community. I am able to work closely with parents and other teachers to further enhance our programs for the children in Litchfield. Having grown up in this community, and now working here, it is important to me to involved in the many wonderful activities PTO provides for our children, families, and teachers.

Sanna Lillie - Co-Treasurer

I joined the PTO to be more involved with the community and get to know new people.  I am so happy I did.  I love volunteering with the PTO because of the amazing, supportive people on the team and because of our focus on kindness and inclusion.

Deb Cahill

Litchfield PTO provides a sense of community for parents as we work together to promote the social and emotional health of our children. Between the in-school events, support of teachers and staff, and educational events, this small group makes a difference. Gandhi said that "we must become the change we want to see in the world." PTO helps me do just that. Moreover, the friends that I have made while volunteering has been a wonderful added bonus. I encourage everyone to join and be a part of making our schools special!

Lauren Eterginio

Watching all the positives the PTO brought to our children and teachers, I couldn't help but join. Not only do I get to be involved in the betterment of our schools, and support of our children and teachers, I also am surrounded by a group of caring and dynamic individuals.

Amy Laskowitz

As we raise our children in a fast-paced technology driven world, it feels imperative that we teach our children about their communities and the world in which they live.  As a mother, I want my children to celebrate the unicity in our diversity. The PTO brings together the talents of individual families and unites them to work together in support of our community.  In partnership with the school, we work to reinforce lessons of acceptance and kindness by engaging young minds and organizing fun family events where new friendships can be forged.  The PTO gives me the opportunity to give back and express my gratitude to the dedicated teachers and staff who selflessly give of themselves to shape our children.

Also on the Leadership Team Brynn Campbell and Melissa Thurston

Outgoing Leadership Team Members
Cathy Winters

"I enjoyed my time with the PTO immensely and am sad to go but hopeful I can continue to be as actively involved as possible.  It is a great way to give back and create positive change for the children and families in our community."

Cathy Winters lead us in adding volunteerism to our scope last year. She is a passionate and dedicated leader with vision and heart. We will miss her but understand that the demands of her job make it impossible for her to take on another thing.

"Even though, I have chosen to step back from the PTO, it was a great and positive experience.  I am really a big fan and supporter in helping our teachers.  The teachers are wonderful and I am very grateful for them and everything they do!!  It is a also a wonderful feeling to help out the community.  Litchfield has some amazing kids and they really are a pleasure to interact with!"

Lisa Nachbar contributed her enthusiasm and attention to detail to the running the Center School Book Fair and many other events. Check out her polar bear pictured.  She is dedicated to her family and our community.  We will miss her sweetness, vision and dedication.

Thank You to Frank VanOrmer

Frank always shows up when we need help.  This year he led the birthday parades and got emergency vehicles to participate when he was able. It was thrilling for the kids!
